Book Review
The book “The Social Welfare Experience 6th edition” by Mary Ann Suppes and Carolyn Cressy Wells. This book is about the concept of social welfare and also the different types of professions merged into it such as law, education, and immigration. The book goes into talking about the salaries that can be earned depending on your level of education. Furthermore the highest education you need to be a certain type of social worker. There's different types of degrees you can earn to be a social worker there is the BSW, MSW, and PhD.
Each chapter begins with a case study it could also be seen as a story. Each chapter talks about an experience a social worker has gone through in their career. beginning each chapter with these case studies intrigues you to continue reading. It doesn’t just throw you to boring definitions. It keeps you interested and at times you don’t want to read the case studies because they are harsh but it shows the reality of the career. The book is 16 chapters long. I will summarize the most important chapters also based in my interest. The chapters are first based on the definition of social work and what each profession does on a day to day basis. “In her professional practice , this social worker had to come to know well the terror and panic that threatened to overwhelm the women that arrived at the door of the shelter; but as a social worker, Pamela also had a good intellectual understanding of the dynamics of domestic abuse and the vulnerability faced by the adults and children at risk situations (pg.4).”
In chapter 2 it goes into the schooling needed as well as the laws required for social workers. After the schooling of course if you would want this to become your career you want to know the salaries earned by taking on this career. Furthermore it talks about how the salaries have changed over the years. The book had a chart showing how much each level of social worker gets. Social workers can work into non-profit organizations, for the government, and school districts and public state.
In chapter three talks about talks about social justice, poverty and populations at risk. the book describes “if social economic justice were to be realized members of diverse populations groups would have an equal chance to achieve a reasonably comfortable standard of living (pg.73).” People that live in poverty rates suffer more due to economic problems. The book talks about how the United States is one of the wealthiest nations and more than 1 in 5 lives in poverty and it keeps growing.
The goal that this book states is to put their profession into action and get programs to help those
people in need. Also that it ‘provide opportunities to people who sincerely want to make a difference in the world (pg.42).” A recommendation for this book would be for student who would want to major in this career or interested in learning what a social worker or social welfare professional does. As well on how the prepare for this career. The case studies give you insight on what the job consists of emotionally and physically.
